Nuna Bean – The Popping Bean!
Finally – a bean with a beef! “”NOON-YA””
Nuna beans have been served as a snack long before there were ‘snacks’ here in the US. These ancient beans were grown high in the Andes mountains and mothers would sort of sauté them in light oil – and their tough skin ‘popped’ revealing a flavorful and healthy interior that pops into your mouth when squeezed. Like an ancient popcorn or something! Great for parties and a great source of energy and just plain fun to eat!
The beef? Well, later, an American company tried to patent the bean as their own, we are told – and the indigenous people of the Andes had none of it! Fought them in court and won! What a story and we are grateful because people tell us that Chip Morris at Mohr-Fry has created a tremendous product by going back to basics for the future in healthy snacks. Best of all, you don’t have to go to ten thousand feet in the Andes to get them!
Cooking is similar to popcorn the old-fashioned way – another lost art! Lightly oil a flat-bottomed non-stick pan (we like Olive Oil), and bring it to a medium-high heat. Add seasoning if you like – garlic, peppers, etc. and shake them or stir as they heat. You’ll know when they are done because you will hear them popping! Move them to a paper towel to absorb the extra oil and cool and you are sure to be a hit with this unique and delicious snack. Some cooks like the roasting method as well, it is all personal preference.
Try these and show your children how much fun they are to eat – and you just may be out of the potato chip and candy business for snacks! One of our customers, Blake, did an amazing job of documenting the process of handling and cooking these beans and we are posting those instructions in our Blog area.
Over last year, we shipped these to several schools around the country for students studying the Peruvian people of the Andes – as a living history lesson. Try these and show your children how much fun they are to eat – and you just may be out of the potato chip and candy business for snacks!
